WIC ~ Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program


What is WIC?
WIC is a supplemental food, nutrition education and breastfeeding support program. It serves low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, and infants/children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk.

What is the Purpose of WIC?
The purpose of WIC is to prevent health problems and to improve the health of program participants during critical times of growth and development.

Who is Eligible?
WIC is available to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, and to infants and young children who meet nutritional need and income criteria. Nutritional need is determined by medical and nutritional assessment. To qualify for WIC, a client must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Income- Client's family income must be at or less than  185% of the current federal poverty level.

  2. Residence - Client must reside in the local agency's geographic service area.

  3. Nutrition Risk - Client must have a nutritional risk determined by a health professional.

     The nutrition evaluation is based on:
                      Height, weight, growth assessment

                      Hematocrit or hemoglobin to screen for anemia

                      Health history and diet assessment

  1. Status - Clients must be eligible as a:

                    Pregnant woman

                    Postpartum woman up to six months

                    Breastfeeding woman up to twelve months

                    Infant (0-1 year of age)

                    Child (under 5 years of age)

When is WIC in my community:  

Omak: (*WIC office CLOSED the first Monday of every month due to servicing other districts)

Inchelium:  *WIC is in Inchelium the first and third Wednesday of every month 9am to 2pm.

 

Nespelem: (*WIC office CLOSED the first and third Wednesday and second Tuesday of every month due to servicing other districts)

Keller: *WIC is in Keller the first Monday of every month 9am to 2pm.
